Then it goes back to the beginning of the chapter to cover the topic of controlling what we say. He picks up the pen knowing what he’s about to write will not be an easy request, but it needs be done because now things are changed, they are no longer slave and master, but brothers in Christ. Paul will make it very clear, that if the world is going to notice this change, then Philemon must put aside his rights that he has under Roman law and not only welcome back Onesimus but forgive him completely. Paul’s asking Philemon to make fellowship a priority over everything else and forgive Onesimus.

The King, the people, even the cows, put sackcloth on in fear of God’s judgment on them. They thought maybe if we give up our evil ways then God would show compassion on us and not destroy our great city, but Nineveh, the great city, would have a completely different attitude fifty to a hundred years later. Nahum the prophet would let them know that God is powerful, that His judgment on them was coming soon. God always blesses those who are faithful, but Nineveh wasn't faithful to Him and their destruction was His justice. Nineveh now becomes a reminder that what we do with God's Grace is important.

Five times Haggai tells the exiles returning to Israel “Give careful thought to your ways”. Five Times! You see, they had their hearts set on rebuilding God’s temple, but when things got tough, they stopped and started to build up things for themselves, so Haggai reminds them give careful thought to their ways when it comes to their finances, their priorities, and how important God is in their lives. He reminds them you can work hard, labor and try to save, but if the things of God aren’t your priority, then what you have may never seem like enough.
